|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 9:30 am, repeating until April 22, 2023

Learn to paint landscapes with regionally renowned artist, Kyle Buckland! This 3-day workshop will be held at the RAL Art Center April 20-22 and there are a few spaces left. All skill levels are welcome.

Come join Kyle in this fun and informative workshop for artists of all skill levels. Kyle will teach you the importance of value, design and color mixing as well as equipping you with the tools and techniques you need to paint successful landscape paintings. We will be working indoors from photos so you can learn how Kyle translates reference photos into beautifully believable landscape paintings. Kyle explains, “You have to know how the eye works; then you can learn what colors to look for in a landscape and how to compose those colors to get the most out of your paintings. ” Kyle will do a demonstration each morning with opportunities for one-on-one instruction in the afternoon.

MATERIALS:

Paint (Oil or Acrylic), 120ml tubes or larger:

Permanent Madder Deep or Rose Madder

Cadmium Red Light

Cadmium Yellow Light

Ultramarine Blue

Burnt Sienna

Yellow Ochre

Ivory Black

Titanium White

Brushes: Flat Bristle Brushes …variety of sizes between #1- #12 (10 or more brushes should suffice)

2 small round bristle brushes, sizes #1 and #2

Palette Knife: At least one small palette knife

Sturdy Easel: tabletop or plein air easel

Palette: A mixing surface for your paint. Make sure your palette is large enough. A 9″x12″ or larger palette is recommended.

Canvas: Please bring up to 3 canvases 11”x14″ or larger.  You may use stretched canvas or canvas boards covered in cotton or linen.

Paper Towels: A decent quality paper towel such as Bounty or Viva is recommended.

Trash bag: For disposing of soiled paper towels.

Proper Clothing: Avoid wearing bright, colorful clothes as these will reflect color back into your painting while you are working. Be sure to dress comfortably.

Medium: I use a mixture of 3/4 Galkyd Painting medium with 1/4 Gamsol Odorless mineral spirits.

Paint Thinner: I recommend Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits. I will have some Gamsol available for students to use if you don’t have any

Medium Cup: A cup to hold your medium so you can dip your brush into it as you work. This should sit on your easel or palette for easy access while painting.

Brush Washer: This will be filled with Gamsol and can be used to swish/clean your brushes in while you work.  I use stainless-steel type brush washers.

A Wet Canvas/Panel Holder: Some way of holding your wet paintings for when you transport them. This could be a simple cardboard box or a fancy Raymar Wet Panel Carrier and anything in between that works for you.
