They have five days to build the boat and have it in the water and race ready.  The 14-foot boats are made of cypress and fir and held together with stainless steel fasteners. During Family Boat Week\, participants work together on-site daily. It’s an activity that bonds families as they team up to construct their boat.\n\n“The purpose is to get families together with a project they can complete\, be proud of\, and use for years\,” he said. Over the last 17 years\, families assembled up to 154 boats within the program.\nJohn England\, the boat shop director\, has seen the program grow for as long as it’s been around. For him\, Family Boatbuilding Week is about seeing people embrace Deltaville’s boatbuilding tradition. England has built 25-30 boats in his 50-year career.

Slavery contradicted these core principles of the Declaration of Independence as America’s creedal document. In part one of HCC&M’s 2026 Summer Speaker Series\, Tony Williams\, a Senior Fellow at the Bill of Rights Institution\, shows how\nenslaved people were the first to make a claim on those principles of liberty\, equality\, and self-government to fulfill the unrealized promise of America. Using the Declaration of Independence as their “North Star\,” they launched “freedom petitions” and “freedom suits” making a claim on natural rights with unexpected and surprising outcomes. Williams will also sign copies of his new\nbook Divided Over the Declaration: How an Enduring Debate Sustains the Vision of America. Wine & cheese reception with speaker and book signing.
