The Va. Shellphish Coalition

Jun 21, 2019 7:00 pm - Jun 21, 2019 10:00 pm

Virginia Shellphish Coalition is an acoustic trio delivering an Americana and Roots Music vibe to their arrangements of classic rock, country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, and guess what…. Americana! Dave Crumpler has played countless acoustic venues from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach since 2002, and between 100 and 140 shows a year since 2009. Mike Glass was lead flat picker and singer with Americana string quartet The Delvers. Jay Shenk played viola also with The Delvers. Together, the trio performs crowd pleasing acoustic arrangements of time tested favorites.

The Shellphish would love to work with you in bringing quality acoustic entertainment to your venue. They will work hard to promote your venue, connect musically with your patrons, and have a good old time playing the acoustic music they love. The reason for being is doing, and The Shellphish do love to perform acoustic music!

Dave, Mike and Jay are a strong presence on the local music scene. Each show offers a chance to display their love for acoustic music. Using an eclectic play list of over 200 songs (including classic rock, alt & modern rock, Americana, bluegrass, Irish pub songs, several Spanish language songs and select originals), they tailor the music to the crowd on hand. Mike’s spot-on flat picking makes a perfect pairing for their arrangements. Jay delivers superb viola arrangements on melody, lead licks and solos. Dave’s acoustic style blends cross-picking, finger style, flat picking and rhythm techniques with influence early on from James Taylor and Neil Young.

Dave and Mike have been friends on the local music scene for years. From 2012 to 2013 Dave transitioned to the acoustic duo format with tenor sax player Mike Sykes until Sykes took a leave of absence with the birth of his new son. Beginning 2014, Mike teamed up with Dave playing to great crowd response, pushing them to further promote this duo in 2015. With Jay often sitting in at the duo gigs, the guys in a seemingly natural evolution formed Virginia Shellphish Coalition!

Mike Glass graduated VCU with a degree in Music Education and by day is a public school music teacher. As Accounting Controller for a local small business, Dave recognizes the fiscal impact and importance of offering live acoustic entertainment to your customers. Jay works in a local family business in Newport News. Yes, they have day jobs.
