The origin of the Pop Castle name is unknown, but the property was the site of a ferry landing from as early as 1702 and had a long history of ownership by a series of planters and ferrymen. The current Greek Revival and Italianate house was built in 1855, with an 1857 addition, for James and Ann Armstrong Gresham on the foundations of a 1780s dwelling of the Shearman family. It was slightly altered again in the 1920s and 1940s. Gresham’s plantation encompassed 272 acres and by 1860 Gresham owned 65 enslaved persons to support his agricultural enterprise. Pop Castle was raided by the British in the War of 1812 and during the Civil War the house was damaged by cannon fire from a Union gunboat. Subsequent owners after 1875 included the Romulus Sanders family, Edward Lemmon, Capt. and Mrs. Thomas B. Denegre, Jr. who secured its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and journalist Roger Mudd. The current owners since 2005 are Walid and Virginia Ramadan, who spent their careers in the U. S. Foreign Service including postings in the Middle East, Mexico, and Brazil. At Pop Castle they combine the original historic character of the home with their unique, international collections of antiques and folk art.

Limited tickets, must be purchased in advance. This event will sell out.
