In a small village, Amina and Elvino are about to be married, though innkeeper Lisa—Elvino’s former fiancée—remains jealous. The arrival of a stranger, Count Rodolfo, stirs suspicion when he shows interest in Amina. That night, while sleepwalking, Amina unknowingly enters Rodolfo’s room. Discovered there by the villagers and Elvino, she is accused of betrayal, and the wedding is called off despite her pleas of innocence. Only Teresa, her adoptive mother, notices a clue—Lisa’s dropped handkerchief—that suggests another truth. Determined to marry Lisa, Elvino rejects Amina until Count Rodolfo explains that she is a sleepwalker, not unfaithful. Teresa produces the handkerchief, exposing Lisa’s lies. In a dramatic climax, Amina appears sleepwalking on a dangerous ledge, lamenting her lost love. Elvino, moved by her purity, returns the wedding ring. Awakening to find her honor restored, Amina rejoices as the village celebrates her vindication.
