In 1830s Paris, four struggling friends—poet Rodolfo, painter Marcello, musician Schaunard, and philosopher Colline—share a bohemian life in their Latin Quarter garret. On Christmas Eve, Rodolfo meets his neighbor Mimì when she comes to relight her candle. Their chance encounter blossoms into love, and he introduces her to his friends at the lively Café Momus, where Marcello also reunites with his flirtatious former lover, Musetta. Passions and jealousies soon complicate their lives, and by winter Mimì and Rodolfo consider parting, as his jealousy masks his deeper fear for her worsening illness. Months later, both couples drift apart, only to be drawn together again when Mimì, gravely ill, is brought back to the garret. The friends do what they can to comfort her—Musetta pawning her earrings, Colline sacrificing his overcoat—while Rodolfo clings desperately to memories of their first meeting. Surrounded by love but overcome by her illness, Mimì quietly dies in Rodolfo’s arms, leaving him heartbroken as the friends mourn in silence.
