In Puritan-held Plymouth during the English Civil War, Elvira is to marry Riccardo, though she loves the Royalist Arturo. Her uncle Giorgio persuades her father to allow the match, and the wedding is prepared. But Arturo discovers that Queen Enrichetta, widow of King Charles, is a prisoner in the fortress and helps her escape disguised in Elvira’s bridal veil. Riccardo allows them to flee but exposes Arturo’s act to the others. Believing herself abandoned on her wedding day, Elvira collapses into madness. Elvira continues to mourn Arturo, even as he is condemned to death. Moved by her suffering, Giorgio convinces Riccardo to show mercy if Arturo returns peacefully. When Arturo risks capture by coming back to Elvira, their love is rekindled. Soldiers rush in to arrest him, but news of the Royalists’ defeat and a general amnesty saves him. Elvira’s senses are restored, and the lovers are finally united in joy.
