Has mom been asking for a getaway? That wouldn’t surprise us. The school year is ending, summer is less than 10 days away, and we’re nearly halfway through the calendar year. It’s time for a pause.

Just an hour’s drive from Richmond, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia Oyster Country might be the perfect place to plan a trip for the leading lady in your family. Send her way with dad or offer to play tour guide for her and enjoy some much needed quality time.

Here’s a culinary adventure map to get inspired…

Friday

4 p.m. Check into the Inn at Warner Hall (47050 Warner Hall Road). Located in Gloucester County, Warner Hall is nestled on a 38-acre waterfront plantation. The bed & breakfast is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Historic Landmark Commission. After you check in and put your bags away, take a moment to walk around the grounds and into the garden to play on the game board.

6 p.m. Head back to the car to watch the sunset at Merroir. Rappahannock Oyster Company’s tasting room highlights the best of region’s oysters. Merroir is one of eight restaurants opened by the oyster company around the country, including a new location in Los Angeles. The restaurant specializes in raw and roasted oysters expertly paired with a large selection of wine and beer from all over the world. Read this article for more oyster pairing ideas.

Saturday

9 a.m. Breakfast at Warner Hall. The bed & breakfast serves coffee, fresh fruit,  and home-baked cinnamon bread and muffins, and main course items including eggs benedict with Chesapeake crab and Belgian waffles. You’ll be ready for the next part of your adventurous day.

10 a.m. Hop in the car for a scenic 30-minute drive to see another area of Virginia Oyster Country, Deltaville. Saturday, May 14, the Deltaville Seafood Festival will take over the town and display local seafood, art, music, and history. Visit the event website for more information.

4 p.m. Head to Marketplace Antiques for a bit of shopping you know mom will love. It’s located on the way back to Warner Hall, just a few miles away. You’ll find vintage car decals, clothing, kitchen ware and other shabby chic items you’ll want to take home.

6 p.m. Return to Warner Hall and place an order for a Supper Basket. The Supper Basket’s offer choices of light appetizers and entrees such as chilled shrimp or hummus and beef tenderloin or ahi tuna to take on the go. While you’re waiting, take a break in your room and decompress from your day romping around the Deltaville Seafood Festival.

7 p.m. Grab your Supper Basket and take a walk. The 38-acre estate has several scenic spots to sit and enjoy good conversation over fresh local food. Take your time with mom and get lost in the peace and quiet. Finish up your night with a glass of wine on the porch of Warner Hall.

Sunday

9 a.m. Stretch your legs for a sweet tooth trip for breakfast at Sunrise Donuts & Sweets. Almond fritters, Boston cream filled maple glaze donuts, and Jersey style bagels, and Bo’nut donuts fill the pastry racks of this local cafe. Sunrise also has a selection of sandwiches and other lunch items. It’s located a little over 2 miles from Warner Hall if you’re up for a long walk.

11 a.m. Pack up and get ready for some more shopping! It’s a shopper’s choice. You can head back into Gloucester for more antique shopping at Holly Hill Antiques or Wisteria Antiques. If you’re driving past Williamsburg on your way home, you’ll be passing by the Williamsburg Premium Outlets. You know mom would love to see how good of a deal she can find…
